Diabetes Are You At Risk?

Diabetes is a scary word! A person is diagnosed with diabetes when they can no longer produce insulin properly or no longer us it properly.

There are three different types of Diabetes:

v Type I diabetes (Adult Onset) is caused when a person does not produce insulin or produces such low amounts that it’s ineffective. These people are insulin dependent for life.

v Type II Diabetes Insulin is produced in too little amounts to be effective or the insulin is misused. Diet and exercise can usually keep this type of diabetes under control, but sometimes medications are needed in addition to diet and exercise.

v Gestational Diabetes usually occurs in pregnant women and sometimes disappears after birth. This type can be controlled with diet and exercise.

So who is at risk of developing diabetes? There is no guarantee any person will or will not develop diabetes but some are at higher risk than others.

Heredity plays a big part weather a person will or will not develop diabetes. Most often if the Mother or Father has it the person is likely to develop diabetes but there are no guarantees they will. As a person gets older the chances of developing diabetes increases. With age it’s a matter of the pancreas slowing down on the production of insulin. Some minority groups such as Hispanics are at a higher risk of developing diabetes. Also, people who are obese are at increased risk of developing diabetes. As a matter of fact, 80% of all overweight people will develop type II diabetes.

Obesity is the main cause of Diabetes and can be prevented by living a healthy lifestyle with balanced diet and exercise.

According to the American Diabetes Association more than 20 million Americans have Type II diabetes, and another 57 million are prediabetic.

I recently asked the question will eating too much sugar cause you to develop diabetes?

I found that in fact it will not directly cause diabetes but, eating too much sugar on a regular basis can cause you to become obese and in turn put you at a much higher risk of developing diabetes.

So what are the symptoms of diabetes?

v Frequent trips to the bathroom

v Unquenchable Thirst

v Losing weight without trying

v Weakness and fatigue

v Numbness in your hands and feet

v Blurred vision

v Extreme Hunger

v Irritability

v Cuts and Bruises are Slow to heal

v Reoccurring Kidney, bladder, gum infections

v Decrease in Sex drive for both Men and Women

In Men diabetes can cause erectile dysfunction

In Women can reduce the levels of testosterone which reduces sex drive. Also it can cause vaginal dryness causing intercourse to be painful. Diabetes can also cause both Men and Women to be more susceptible to yeast infections.

Diabetes is a scary disease and can lead to many other diseases such as heart disease. Too much sugar in the blood can cause damage to many parts of the body including blood vessels. People have gone blind and even had to have limbs amputated due to diabetes.

If you take care of yourself, follow your doctor’s advice, eat well balanced nutritious diet staying away from certain foods that increase your blood sugar and exercise you can live a long happy life.
